Cross-sectional technologies for important sectors in NRW

1. The Sector in NRW
Through its thematic breadth, the cluster "Micro/Nanotechnology, Innovative Materials" possesses specific features which are not comparable with any other NRW cluster. The cluster gives equal coverage to a number of cross-sectional technologies which affect practically all sectors and which can therefore create extremely strong leverage for NRW as an economic region. In view of the region's great variety of subject matter and its broad effect on all sectors and against the background of global developments, it is crucial for the research facilities and enterprises in NRW to recognise opportunities for leadership in research and in the market and to develop their own strengths accordingly. Particularly important here is the optimum integration and networking of all the players in the added value chain in order to realise the synergy potential of the different technologies in interesting products and services in the various sectors. The cluster concept includes the measures necessary for achieving these goals and for making NRW the top state for innovation in the field of nano, micro and optical technologies, as well as in innovative materials and system integration.
2. Aims and Tasks of the Cluster Management
The primary aim of the Cluster Management is, following four key themes to make the state of North Rhine-Westphalia the nation's most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based industrial region in the field of nano, micro and materials technology. This includes both the creation of an environment supporting and accelerating innovation and also a strategic sharpening of image aimed at an internationally visible top position in these fields. A further aim is to strengthen and position both the industry and science sectors and to coordinate and optimise the transfer between the two to create more added value. Finally, the cluster must take account of the future viability of these fields of technology through equal commitment to the training of the excellent next-generation workers that exist in science and engineering and to further training for the sustained security and creation of jobs in NRW.
The Consortium of NRW Initiatives represents a large section of the players in NRW and has set itself the objectives of integrating further major players and networks not yet represented, utilising the innovative strengths of all players and ensuring that all players have access to these strengths. This also means that the Consortium is open to constructive collaboration with all firms or organisations which wish to take part in the development and reinforcement of the cluster.
3. Main Areas of Work and Projects of the Cluster
The work of the Cluster Management is based on four strategic key themes:
The first key theme is making information on existing technology potentials and sector requirements accessible and developing efficient and binding communication platforms between technology developers and lead sectors in NRW.
The second key theme is intensification of the dialogue between universities and training facilities, on the one hand, and firms and representatives of the sector on the other so that new knowledge can be more quickly generated and rendered commercially useful.
The third key theme is, in collaboration with the NRW sector clusters and the technology networks, the identification of markets and main technologies in which a critical mass of enterprise and technology potential exists in NRW, in order to focus private and public investment on these areas.
The fourth key theme is, in addition to normal information material and presentation forums, the development of new marketing strategies and instruments for the targeted address of customers and investors on behalf of NRW technology developers and producers.
